February Round Up!
February was set off in the correct manner with Skye Breeze winning at Newcastle from a great ride from Callum Rodriguez. It was brilliant to see him win again this year, and he has been in great form since, and he builds up quietly towards his next start.
February has been a month of conditioning work for all of the horses and with only Skye Breeze as our sole runner. The older horses have been doing a lot of conditioning work and have been building on their work over the winter with a few stepping up their work load in preparation for the season ahead.
The 2yo’s are all coming along very well and Ed has been very pleased with how they have progressed throughout the winter. They have all grown a considerable amount since they arrived in the autumn and are coming into themselves, some of their work load has increased in the ones in which Ed feels are ready to do so. It has been a very testing winter with the weather really battling against us but the horses have come on and its been another good month of building foundations for the season ahead. Skye Breeze was our only runner in February as Ed looks forward to the turf season with a full team of fresh horses. The team will start to have a few runners in March on the all-weather for their prep runs before going on the turf once the season has officially started.
March the 1st saw Gemstar run at Newcastle under Callum Rodriguez where she finished 2nd and ran a terrific race for her first time on the track making up a lot of ground in the final few furlongs. Gemstar is a new horse to Ed’s string this year and he is very much looking forward to the season ahead with this striking filly.
Although we have battled with all types of elements of bad weather over the winter months, (dare I say it) Spring feels like it might just be around the corner and has defiantly made a very welcomed appearance this morning with a fantastic sunrise for 1st lot and warmth in the sun (see main picture taken this morning during 1st lot).
There has been an exciting expansion here at Bethell Racing with a new barn being built, this will house 20 more horses in a purpose built barn. The barn in situated just below our arena and sits well into the rolling landscape, this barn will also see an additional walker and feed house. This is a very welcomed addition to our current yard and we are extremely excited to see the finished product in full working order, hopefully it will only be a few more weeks until it is up and running with the barns new residents!
It is a very exciting season ahead with the older horses and the group of 2yo’s that we have. We are very much looking forward to March which will see runners having prep runs before the turf season starts.
